The only way to get to the Gallipoli Peninsula from Istanbul is by car. The long 4.5 hour drive took us through several cities and the Turkish countryside—none of it memorable. Gallipoli is the World several monuments erected in memory of the 8,700 Australians, 10,000 French, 2,700 New Zealanders, 21,200 British and 86,000 Turkish troops that lost their lives. It was very moving to see this area and to learn about its sad history from the viewpoint of the Turkish.
